A central air conditioning system consists of a condensing unit and an evaporator coil. The condensing unit compresses and cools refrigerant gas before sending it to the evaporator coil. A blower passes air over the super cooled coil, cooling the air. This cool air is then circulated through ducts in your home. A "split system" air conditioning setup places the condensing unit outside your home and the evaporator coil inside.
Central Air Conditioning and Efficiency
The efficiency of a central air conditioner is indicated by its Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio or SEER. The higher the SEER; the more efficient the unit. The more efficient the unit, the less electricity needed to operate it.
Central Air Conditioning Sizing
Choose a unit that's too large, and it will cost more to purchase, more to operate and probably won't remove enough humidity from the air to make you feel comfortable. Choose a unit that's too small, and it will lack the capacity to give you the comfort you want on the hottest days
